When voters go to the polls May 20, those living in the 51st ward of the Southwest section of the city will have the opportunity to elect a new ward leader.

Community advocate Gregory Benjamin is hoping they will choose him.

During an interview at his home, Benjamin said he has lived in Southwest for over 40 years and raised his children in the community.

Benjamin moved away but returned to the area 10 years ago.

“When I came back it was inundated with protestation and drugs,” he said. “The Lord blessed me that that was my first mission.”

Benjamin said he began regularly sweeping the streets and organizing residents to assist in the effort.

Eventually the drug dealers and prostitutes began to leave. Benjamin said some of the drug dealers actually began helping during street cleanings before they left altogether.

“I have always had a desire to be involved in the community. I have been a community activist since my early 20s,” he said. “From that time until now I have always been involved in the community.”

Community and politics are often separated, said Benjamin but he believes that the two should be bridged.

“The issues that affect the people, even though they are community issues, politicians tend to have a lot of influence on things one way or the other,” Benjamin said.

From street cleaning and improvement, Benjamin said he also worked to organize block captains and organized the Kingsessing Fifth Division Community of Neighbors (K5DN), which he called the community family.

K5DN challenged school closings, giveaway book bags to local children and provide blankets for the homeless during the winter, according to Benjamin.

As a ward leader, Benjamin said he would have an opportunity to mobilize those interested in becoming committee people and have already done so.

To win the seat of ward leader, Benjamin would have to defeat long-term incumbent Vivian Miller at the polls in May.

Once committee people are mobilized, Benjamin said he would, as ward leader, have an opportunity to build relations with residents and block captains that would benefit the communities they serve.

“Under my watch that would definitely be a requirement, that committee people canvass their area, know who their block captains are and bridge a relationship with them,” he said.
